In 1989 Handler was diagnosed with cancer and died ten years afterward. Handler was educated in Reform Judaism by her father and grandfather, who were Jewish. Handler lived in a great neighborhood with a happy upbringing. She was just 19 when she decided to move into Los Angeles and pursue acting. Handler was a professional actress to support her. When she turned age 21, Handler decided to pursue stand-up comedy full time, as she was able to discover her storytelling talents. Handler's professional career started as part of an all-female Oxygen television cast on the hidden camera/practical humor reality series Girls Behaving Unstably. Between 2002 and 2005, the show aired. The host began to appear on different shows such including Weekends at D.L., The Bernie Mac Show, The Practice and My Wife and Kids. Handler started working as an associate on The Tonight Show. Handler achieved her first big break in 2006 when she hosted her own E! show. The show was named the Chelsea Handler Show. The show ran for a total of two seasons. Handler followed this up by doing a show on Comedy Central Hour Stand-Up Comedy Tour and in the United States. Stand-up comedy performances from Handler were telecast by VH1, Comedy Central's Premium Blend, and HBO. In 2010 it was revealed that she was going to host for the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. She was the only female host in history in the same category as Roseanne.
